WASHINGTON, Oct. 21 (UPI) -- U.S. President George W. Bush appeared to have opened up a lead in Wisconsin, a 2004 battleground state, according to Thursday's Gallup Poll.

Among likely Wisconsin voters, the poll said, Bush has taken a 6-point lead, 50 percent to 44 percent over Sen. John F. Kerry, the Democratic presidential nominee. Among registered voters, Bush leads by 8 points, 51 percent to 43 percent. The independent slate of Ralph Nader and Peter Camejo polled 3 percent among both groups.

In a head-to-head matchup without Nader, Bush polled 51 percent to Kerry's 45 percent among both registered and likely voters.

The results are based on a poll of 818 registered Wisconsin voters conducted Oct. 16-19 with a sampling error of 4 percentage points. For the subset of 678 respondents identified as likely to vote in the November election, the margin of error is plus or minus 4 points assuming voter turnout is at 65 percent, a figure Gallup computed based on the state's past voting history.
