WASHINGTON, Oct. 21 (UPI) -- Two-dozen Olympic and professional athletes have endorsed U.S. President George Bush's re-election, the Bush campaign said Thursday.

"The same qualities that make a great athlete make a great president -- the determination to do what is right, regardless of the latest polls, the personal strength to bear the weight of the nation on your shoulders, and the faith that a higher power will direct the actions of good people," they said in an open letter released by the Bush campaign. "We see in President Bush these same qualities."

The athletes singled out Bush's performance in the war on terror.

The letter was signed by Olympic medal winners such as softball player Dot Richardson, gymnasts Mary Lou Retton and Kerri Strug, and swimmer Josh Davis. Professionals included baseball greats Ernie Banks and Bob Feller, footballers John Ellway, Matt Hasselbeck and NBA All-Star Karl Malone.
