KHARTOUM, Sudan, Oct. 21 (UPI) -- Sudan's government and Darfur rebels are likely to restart talks Thursday as the African Union said it would increase its forces in the restive region.
Rebel groups said, however, travel problems prevented many of them from reaching the talks, which are being held in Abuja, Nigeria, the BBC reported.
Also Thursday, the AU, an umbrella group of African nations, said it would increase its force in Darfur from 390 to more than 3,000, the BBC said. The figure still falls short of expectations.
The violence in Darfur pits government-backed Arab militia, called Janjaweed, against the local black population and rebel groups. More than 70,000 people have been killed in what human rights groups call the world's worst humanitarian crisis.
The United Nations regards the violence as "ethnic cleansing," but the United States has said the violence constitutes "genocide."
