MOSCOW, Oct. 21 (UPI) -- A human rights group announced Thursday the number of racist skinheads in Russia has surpassed 50,000, the Interfax news agency reported.
At a news conference, Alla Gerber of the Holocaust Fund said statistics show an apparent rise in nationalism.
"In Moscow alone, there are no less than 5,000 openly active young men shaved bald, united in groups, who share a separate nationalist ideology," Gerber said.
She said surveys had also shown 28 percent of adult Russians want to bring back special settlements for Jews, and 48 percent are in favor of limiting the rights of national minorities.
"Society is sick with xenophobia. Like a cancer, it is spreading throughout the country," she said.
Alexander Brod, head of the Moscow human rights bureau said sociologists had found 60 percent of Russian adults share the ideology, "Russia is for Russians, and all misfortunes are from foreigners."
In St. Petersburg Wednesday night, a 20-year-old Vietnamese university student was killed by a mob of at least 15 skinheads who beat him and stabbed him.
