WASHINGTON, Oct. 20 (UPI) -- A bidding war has erupted on K Street for retiring Sen. John Breaux, D-La., to join the ranks of the top lobbying firms in Washington.
The Hill reported Wednesday blue chip firms Patton Boggs and Baker, Donelson, Bearman, Caldwell & Berkowitz are in a bidding war over getting the moderate Democrat to join their lobbyist ranks.
While Breaux now makes $155,000 annually, reports are circulating he is being offered annual compensation packages reaching $1.5 million a year.
The senator confirmed he has been approached by several firms but he dismissed such figures, noting he is also considering opening his own firm with fellow retiring Sen. Don Nickles, R-Okla.
Because of his history of working well with both Republicans and Democrats, Breaux would be a real catch for any firm.
As to whether he will take to lobbying and supporting positions for pay to his former colleagues on Capitol Hill, Breaux once allegedly commented while his vote in the Senate could not be purchased, it could be rented.
