Poll: Kerry holds NJ lead, but Bush gains

HAMDEN, Conn., Oct. 19 (UPI) -- Democratic nominee John Kerry leads President Bush among likely New Jersey voters, a poll released Tuesday indicated, but not in leadership qualities.

A poll by Quinnipiac University found Kerry, D-Mass., held a 4-point lead over the president in the traditionally Democratic state, but respondents said 50 percent to 42 percent that Bush acted more like a leader.

The poll's findings indicate an erosion of support for the Democratic nominee in recent weeks.

"New Jersey wasn't supposed to be close, but Sen. Kerry can't seem to open a solid lead," Maurice Carroll, director of the university's Polling Institute, said in a statement.

The poll also found the majority of respondents chose Bush on foreign policy issues such as the war in Iraq and terrorism, while Kerry led in domestic issues.

The findings were based on a survey conducted Thursday through Sunday with 1,123 registered New Jersey voters and 786 likely voters. It has an error margin of up to 3.5 percentage points.
