DENVER, Oct. 19 (UPI) -- Republican Pete Coors has pulled ahead of Democrat Attorney General Ken Salazar in the race for the U.S. Senate in Colorado, a new poll indicates.
Coors leads Salazar 45 to 40 percent, according to the Rocky Mountain News and KCNC-TV poll released Tuesday in Denver. The margin of error is 4.9 percent.
The latest poll, taken late last week, shows 6 percent of voters are undecided, 6 percent support third-party candidates and others declined to say. Salazar led the Colorado beer executive 52 percent to 42 percent a month ago in the same poll.
Lori Weigel of Public Opinion Strategies, which conducted the polls, said the latest numbers indicate registered Republican voters, who outnumber Democrats in Colorado, are becoming more familiar with Coors, a newcomer to politics.
Salazar spokesman Cody Wertz pointed out a CNN/USA Today poll released Monday showed Salazar with a 1-point lead in the closely watched Senate contest.
The most recent News-KCNC poll was conducted last Wednesday, Thursday and Friday among 400 self-described voters.
