Cuban wrestler pleads guilty

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., Oct. 19 (UPI) -- A former Olympic wrestler for Cuba has pleaded guilty to charges he intentionally rammed his vehicle into an airport terminal in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

But Alexis Vila Perdomo's motive for driving his Sport Utility Vehicle into the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport terminal remains a mystery, The Miami Herald reported Tuesday.

U.S. District Judge Donald Graham scheduled sentencing for Jan. 5. Vila faces a maximum of 20 years in prison.

Court documents show Vila, 33, drove his 1998 Lincoln Navigator through two sets of glass doors at 45 mph and crashed into a wall behind an airline ticket counter. No one was hurt.

Vila's attorney, Robert Berube, said it was an accident and Vila was lost at the time of the July 4 accident.

"It wasn't like he was driving around looking to drive through the airport," Berube said.

Vila won a bronze medal for Cuba in the 1996 Olympics at Atlanta and defected in 1997.
