Voting glitches pop up in Florida

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., Oct. 18 (UPI) -- Early voting began in Florida Monday, two weeks and a day before the Nov. 2 general election, and there were problems in the Fort Lauderdale, Fla., area.

Broward County elections officials said nine of the 14 early voting sites were having problems with a live database connection used to verify that a voter is property registered, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported.

The voting glitch resulted in long lines at the nine polling places.

Voters at some of the sites said poll workers told them the problems started 20-30 minutes after they opened at 8:30 a.m.

Voting went smoothly elsewhere including Miami-Dade County and Palm Beach County, the center of the controversy surrounding a recount four years ago.

In Miami, about 150 people gathered for a rally led by Rev. Al Sharpton and former Attorney General Janet Reno.

Both major-party presidential candidates stumped the state on the first day of early voting. Three other states also started Monday -- Arkansas, Texas and Colorado.
