Flawed rail eyed in LA train derailment

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 18 (UPI) -- A rail line through part of Los Angeles reopened Monday after a weekend freight train derailment that damaged homes and forced several evacuations.

Union Pacific told the Los Angeles Times a rail appeared to have broken, which may have caused several cars to jump the track Saturday and tumble into a Pico Rivera neighborhood.

No one was injured but at least one home was damaged badly enough to be declared uninhabitable. Downed power lines forced dozens of residents to move out temporarily while electricity was restored and crews cleared the tracks in time for Monday morning's commute.

The Times said the broken rail was sent to the National Transportation Safety Board lab in Washington for further testing, and added that the rail line had been inspected both visually and with a sound-wave generator since Sept. 21 and no problems were found.
