Drunken man forces landing in France

NANTES, France, Oct. 18 (UPI) -- A highly intoxicated man onboard a charter flight from Norway to the Canary Islands forced the plane to make an emergency landing in Nantes, France.

Passengers aboard the Spanair flight Sunday night said the man attempted to break into the cockpit, Aftenposten reported Monday.

Although he did not manage to enter the flight deck, the captain made an emergency landing and the unidentified passenger was arrested.

Another passenger told the newspaper VG that the intoxicated man first started harassing the flight attendants when they refused to serve him more alcohol.

The man could sober up when he learns he could be charged with the cost of the emergency landing, estimated at $14,000, as well as face a fine or prison sentence for threatening the security of a flight.
