ST. PETERSBURG, Russia, Oct. 18 (UPI) -- A Congolese student has been attacked and injured in St. Petersburg in a racist attack, the Interfax news agency reported Monday.

"On the night of Oct. 17, three unidentified persons approached a student of the Polytechnic Institute, a native of Congo, who was walking with a young woman. The unidentified people provoked a conflict that evolved into a fight," the police source said.

The student was hospitalized with head injuries and his three attackers escaped, the news agency said.

Racist attacks against people of dark skin have grown significantly in number across Russia since the massacre of 344 people, half of them children by Chechen secessionist terrorists in Beslan, North Ossetia last month. Three people were killed in separate attacks across Russia last week according to previous Interfax reports.
