More prisoners released from Abu Ghraib

BAGHDAD, Oct. 17 (UPI) -- Approximately 260 more prisoners were released Sunday from the notorious Abu Ghraib prison near Baghdad.

An Iraqi justice ministry source said 120 of them were released on bail, while the others were permanently freed.

Iraqi officials said they were coordinating with U.S. officials for the release of additional prisoners from Abu Ghraib, were some U.S. soldiers apparently tortured Iraqi prisoners.

They said authorities wanted to empty the prison before holding the general elections in January as an incentive for participation.

They added Sunday's move was also to mark the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which started Friday.
