ALBANY, N.Y., Oct. 15 (UPI) -- A political party backed by billionaire George Soros allegedly involved itself in a New York Democratic primary, the New York Post reports.

The Working Families Party, which received $81,500 from the Soros-backed Drug Policy Alliance, used the money for mailings in support of David Soares -- a pro-drug legalization candidate for district attorney of Albany County in his successful challenge to incumbent District Attorney Paul Clyne in the Democratic primary.

The New York state Republican Committee complained, accusing the Soares campaign of receiving illegal campaign contributions from groups promoting drug law reform.

New York State Supreme Court Justice Bernard Malone, calling the Working Families Party's support of Soares an improper intrusion into the Democratic primary referred the case to local prosecutors and Attorney General Eliot Spitzer for a possible criminal investigation.

Under New York's election laws, one party cannot interfere in another party's primary.
