Salazar to investigate voter fraud charges

DENVER, Oct. 14 (UPI) -- Colorado Attorney General Ken Salazar said Thursday that his office is investigating and prosecuting voter fraud cases in the state.

Salazar responded to calls from Gov. Bill Owens and Secretary of State Donetta Davidson for more vigorous investigations of alleged voter registration fraud.

Salazar said criminal charges have already been filed in one case and other cases brought to his attention two weeks ago are also being investigated.

The exchange has political overtones because Owens and Davidson are Republicans and Salazar, a Democrat, is in a close race for the U.S. Senate with Republican Pete Coors.

The presidential race is also very close in the state.

The Denver Post has reported the state's registration rolls include 6,000 felons who are ineligible to vote. There have also been charges of voters registering multiple times.

Davidson has directed county clerks to give provisional ballots to any known felons so their qualifications can be verified. Early voting begins Monday in Colorado.
