Daniels has slim lead in Indiana gov. race

SOUTH BEND, Ind., Oct. 14 (UPI) -- The latest poll out of Indiana has Gov. Joe Kernan running behind GOP challenger Mitch Daniels by 3 points, the South Bend (Ind.) Tribune reported Thursday.

The Research 2000 poll of 602 likely Indiana voters showed Daniels, head of the White House Office of Management and Budget under George W. Bush, with 46 percent of the vote vs. 43 percent for Kernan, a Democrat and former lieutenant governor.

Libertarian candidate Kenn Gividen took just 2 percent.

According to the Oct. 10-12 poll, Daniels and Kernan enjoy almost identical favorable and unfavorable ratings: Daniels' has a 52 percent favorable, 23 percent unfavorable rating; Kernan comes in at 51 percent favorable, 27 percent unfavorable.

Daniels polled a a sizeable lead among men -- 49 percent to 41 percent -- while Kernan led narrowly among women, 45 percent to 43 percent.

The survey has an error margin of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
