Optional paper ballots urged in Florida

TALLAHASEE, Fla., Oct. 13 (UPI) -- About six voting rights groups have asked the state to consider ways to assure a recount will be verifiable.

The coalition of voting organizations says among other means the 15 counties using touch-screen machines should give voters the option of using paper ballots, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported Wednesday.

They also want a federal court to supervise any election recount. The groups and a representative of Rep. Robert Wexler, D-Boca Raton, met with aides to Florida Secretary of State Glenda Hood Tuesday in Tallahassee.

"We can't fix it completely for 2004, there's no doubt about that, but we certainly can set up a system that helps us get farther than they are right now," said attorney Alma Gonzalez, who represents the coalition.

Some elections supervisors said the groups are asking for too much too soon before the election.

"It's a recipe for disaster. It would be impossible for us to do anything at this late date," said Theresa LePore, Palm Beach County elections supervisor.
