Sessions leads Frost in Texas race

DALLAS, Oct. 12 (UPI) -- Republican Rep. Pete Sessions has a 6-point lead over Democrat Rep. Martin Frost in a closely watched North Texas congressional race.

Sessions leads Frost 50 percent to 44 percent in the poll of likely voters conducted Thursday through Saturday in the 32nd District for The Dallas Morning News. Six percent of the respondents were unsure in the survey published Tuesday. The margin of error was 3.5 percentage points.

The poll indicated that Sessions has a solid base of support in the district that usually backs Republicans, pollster Ann Selzer said. Frost's best hopes are with independents and Hispanic voters, she said.

Frost told the News a higher than expected Hispanic turnout would close the margin in the district, which is 36 percent Latino. Only about 4 percent of the respondents were Hispanic.

Sessions campaign manager Chris Homan said Frost "continues to believe in his own con game. Six points is a very wide margin in this race."

Frost filed against Sessions in the 32nd district when the Republican-dominated Legislature tore his old district apart last year in a hotly debated redistricting plan.
