Yemen, Saudi to swap criminals

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia, Oct. 11 (UPI) -- Yemen and Saudi Arabia are completing arrangements to swap nationals wanted in their countries on criminal charges, diplomatic sources said Monday.

A Riyadh-based Yemeni diplomat, requesting anonymity, said, "Sanaa will hand over to Riyadh in the coming few days a Saudi national wanted for security crimes not related to terrorism who had managed to flee to Yemen."

In return, Yemen would receive a Yemeni national imprisoned in Saudi Arabia, the diplomat said.

It will not be the first prisoner swap between the two neighboring Arab countries, which signed a security cooperation agreement in their joint efforts to combat crime and terrorism.

A few months ago, Yemen and Saudi Arabia exchanged 40 terror suspects.

Riyadh then repatriated 21 Yemenis, including suspects in the October 2002 bombing of the giant French tanker, the Limburg, and received in return 12 criminals including al-Qaida terror suspects, one of whom figured on the list of 26 most wanted Saudi terrorists.
