Legacy of Sen. Dennis Chavez hailed

WASHINGTON, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- An Arizona Congressman delivered the Democrats' weekly radio address Saturday, criticizing Republicans for failing to care about underprivileged people.

"Republicans in Congress have neglected the public interest in favor of the special interests, while leaving more than 4 million Hispanic children without the child tax credit, denying workers unemployment insurance, and ignoring the needs of the 13 million Hispanic Americans without health insurance," said Rep. Raul Grijalva, D-Ariz.

"They have said "no" to creating jobs, but "yes" to new tax loopholes for those who need them least. They have said "no" to ur seniors, but "yes" to insurance companies and HMOs."

In contrast to GOP priorities stands the legacy of deceased Sen. Dennis Chavez, D-N.M., Grijalva said.

Senator Chavez was one of only three Hispanic Senators in U.S. history. Grijalva said his vision of hope, compassion and civil rights brought prosperity to millions of Americans.

"We must honor the legacy of Senator Chavez, and open more doors of opportunity for our children," he added.
