WASHINGTON, Oct. 8 (UPI) -- U.S. Public health officials told lawmakers Friday the flu vaccine shortage this year is evidence of problems with the production system.
British health officials shut down the factory that was to produce the largest supply of flu vaccine for the U.S. market this year because some had been contaminated.
The National Journal reported Friday Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Julie Gerberding told a House panel congressional appropriators have provided only $50 million, fully half, of the Bush administration's annual request for flu vaccination research funding over the last two budget cycles.
"I hope that the Congress regards this as a call to action," Gerberding told the House Government Reform Committee. "We have a fragile vaccine production system in this country that is getting more fragile."
Lawmakers in attendance agreed with the assessments regarding the inadequacies of the current vaccine production system and were particularly concerned over the heavy reliance on foreign-produced vaccines and the time-consuming process currently used to make them.
