WASHINGTON, Oct. 7 (UPI) -- House Appropriations Chairman Bill Young, R-Fla., has sent a request to the White House for an additional $1.6 billion in hurricane relief.
The House passed an emergency $10.9 billion aid bill Wednesday, but Young said the state needs more for agriculture, highway repairs and damaged military bases, The Miami Herald reported Thursday.
"My state needs this and we are going to get it," Young said of the additional money. "We will not be stymied by some bureaucracy or people who don't want this moved."
Florida has been hit by four hurricanes in the last two months and insured damages have topped $20 billion. Uninsured damages will significantly increase that figure.
Young's committee had sent the White House a $12.9 million list of needs for hurricane recovery, but the White House budget office came up with only $10.9 billion.
Florida Democrats lashed out at the administration. They said it was not keeping its promises to meet the state's disaster needs.
