China evolves beyond old Communist slogan

BEIJING, Oct. 6 (UPI) -- A long editorial by China's state-run news agency Wednesday said Communist Party work had evolved beyond the founding fathers' slogan of "Serve the People."

The Xinhua article said the phrase represented the finest tradition the Party had passed on and has today evolved into "exercising government power in the interest of the people."

Four major challenges faced by Chinese president Hu Jintao and premier Wen Jiabao were discussed in the article: getting back pay to internal migrant workers; increasing rural incomes; building a social security net for the unemployed; and efforts in combating HIV/AIDS.

Since Hu became Party general secretary in November 2002 he has made 15 inspection tours outside Beijing to assess the situation in places around China.

His ally and fellow fourth generation leader Wen Jiabao has made 17 such tours since becoming responsible for the day-to-day running of the government as its premier in March 2003.
