Blast in Pakistan kills 33

MULTAN, Pakistan, Oct. 6 (UPI) -- A car bomb exploded early Thursday at a gathering of Islamic militants in Multan in central Pakistan, killing at least 33 people, CNN reported.

Dozens more were wounded in the blast, the report said. Police inspector general Talat Mahmood told CNN the car bomb was apparently detonated by remote control.

He said five policemen were among the wounded, and that the death toll was expected to rise.

The explosion occurred as some 2,500 militants were leaving after observing the anniversary of their leader's death in the industrial town. Police said the car was parked at one of two exits.

The anniversary was for Maulana Azam Tariq, head of the banned Sunni extremist group, Sipah-e-Sahaba, who was shot dead in broad daylight a year ago in the capital of Islamabad.

No one has so far claimed responsibility for the bombing
