VP candidates debate jobs, poverty

CLEVELAND, Oct. 5 (UPI) -- The way to end poverty is to create more jobs and reduce litigation costs, Vice President Dick Cheney said during Tuesday's debate in Cleveland.

"We have to make America the best place in the world to do business, and that means we've got to deal effectively with tax policy, we've got to reduce the litigation costs," Cheney told debate moderator Gwen Ifill of PBS.

Sen. John Edwards, D-N.C., during his rebuttle, said the Bush administration supports the outsourcing of jobs, which Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Kerry of Massachusetts has consistently opposed. Edwards charged that 2.7 million manufacturing jobs have been lost under President Bush.

Edwards proposed rolling back tax cuts for the wealthy and balancing the budget as ways to create an environment for more job creation.
