Poll: Indiana governors race tightening

INDIANAPOLIS, Oct. 5 (UPI) -- Republican challenger Mitch Daniels has a slight 3-point lead over incumbent Indiana Gov. Joe Kernan, according to an Indianapolis Star poll.

Daniels led Kernan 46 percent to 43 percent among respondents who said they were definite voters, but the lead is within the 3.2 percent margin or error of the poll. Danels had a 6-point lead after Indiana's May primary.

Kernan, the former lieutenant governor, disputes the poll's results and says the race is neck-and-neck. Thirty percent of respondents said they were not committed to any candidate.

Kernan succeeded late Democratic Gov. Frank O'Bannon, who died of a massive stroke during a conference in Chicago last year, and is seeking election to a full term.

The telephone poll of 957 voters was conducted for the Indianapolis Star and WTHR-TV by Selzer & Co. of Des Moines, Iowa, Wednesday to Sunday night.
