India mourns bomb, gun attack victims

DIMAPUR., India, Oct. 3 (UPI) -- Church congregations in India held special services Sunday after weekend bomb blasts and gun attacks killed at least 56 people and injured 100 others.

No one has claimed responsibility for theSaturday bombings that occurred in a crowded railway station and a nearby outdoor market. But police suspect rebels from the National Democratic Front of Bodoland were involved, the BBC reported.

Sunday is the anniversary of the formation of the banned group, which wants an independent homeland for the Bodo tribe in Assam.

"We're in a state of shock and disbelief," said G. Ginam, a member of Nagaland's Baptist Council. "The only way we can heal the wounds is by offering prayers in memory of the departed and for the wellbeing of those who lived."

Following the bomb blasts there were about six other attacks in which Bodo rebels fired indiscriminately at shoppers in three village markets near the city of Guwahati.
