WASHINGTON, Sept. 30 (UPI) -- In a growing number of regions in the United States, racial and ethnic minorities outnumber whites, 2003 census statistics released Thursday showed.
Whites in at least 26 counties lost majority status since the last census of 2000, USA Today reported. They included California's Orange County, home to Disneyland.
"If Disneyland were built today, it would be Miguel Mouse's home," said Robert Lang, head of the Metropolitan Institute at Virginia Tech.
In 11 mostly rural Texas counties, the white population is under 50 percent, and the entire state is almost there.
Of the nation's 3,141 counties, 280 now have white minorities.
In some parts of the country, the shift is driven by a surge in Hispanics and Asians. In others, the number of blacks is rising and non-Hispanic whites is dropping. Nationally, whites still make up 68 percent of the population.
