Soros vows millions for Kerry campaign

WASHINGTON, Sept. 29 (UPI) -- Billionaire philanthropist George Soros is pumping millions of dollars into Democratic presidential contender Sen. John Kerry's campaign.

Soros made the announcement to reporters in Washington Tuesday, saying while he has already given $15 million to the Massachusetts senator's campaign, he personally was spending $3 million more to tour 12 U.S. cities with his anti-George Bush message.

By mid-August, Soros said he fully expected Kerry to win the election. But recently, he said he saw what he called the outrageous and slanderous Swift boat commercials against Kerry's Vietnam military record and how they had damaged his standing in the polls.

So, he decided to scrap a trip in October to Russia to work against the president's re-election.

"If I could contribute to repudiating the Bush policies, I think it would be the greatest good deed I could do for the world," he said.

The Republican National Committee issued a statement saying, "The only explanation for the Daddy Warbucks of the Democratic Party, George Soros, to step out from behind the curtain 35 days before the election is his obvious concern for his investment in John Kerry."
