Abdullah warns extremists may win in Iraq

PARIS, Sept. 28 (UPI) -- Jordan's King Abdullah warned extremists would be the winners in Iraq, if elections are held in January, as planned.

"If elections take place in the current disorder, the best-organized faction would be the extremists," the king told Le Figaro in remarks published Tuesday.

"The result will reflect the advantage of the extremists," he added.

Abdullah met with French President Jacques Chirac Tuesday in Paris. The two leaders made no public remarks, but Chirac reportedly said Paris had conditions before signing on to a U.S. plan to hold an international conference on Iraq.

The conference suggestion was originally sponsored by France and Russia, earlier this year, but met with tepid U.S. response.

On Monday, French Foreign Minister Michel Barnier told a French radio station the conference agenda should include discussions of an eventual U.S. troop withdrawal from Iraq.
