Syria tells U.N. of terror's source

NEW YORK, Sept. 27 (UPI) -- Syria's foreign minister told the U.N. General Assembly Monday that the war on terror is being fought on the wrong front.

Farouk al-Shara' said that while political solutions may not guarantee full success in combating terror, pursuing military solutions is a recipe for disaster.

"The people of the developing countries are wondering: Why would hundreds of fighter-jets and thousands of soldiers be hauled across continents, and why would billions of dollars be spent to bring about a regime-change in a given country when these resources could be otherwise channeled, even partially, to finance education or development projects in these countries?" he said.

Shara' distinguished between terrorism and legitimate resistance saying that people living under foreign occupation have the right to resist their occupiers in accordance with international law and the U.N. Charter. He also said that as long as Israel terrorizes Palestinians and occupies Arab lands, violence in Iraq will persist.
