Canadian E.coli outbreak may spread

CALGARY, Sept. 26 (UPI) -- The E.coli outbreak in Calgary, Canada, has affected more than 40 people and health officials expected more people to become infected Sunday.

Officials said they fear the situation may be more serious than initially estimated, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation reported Sunday.

Provincial and federal health officials had not isolated the root cause of the outbreak Saturday, but they said 16 of those who fell ill ate meat derived from the same source.

When the first E.coli cases were reported earlier in the week, the suspected cause was meat consumed at some local restaurants, but inspectors said they have now turned their attention to packaging plants in southern Alberta.
