Al-Qaida threatens Lebanon, Syria

BEIRUT, Lebanon, Sept. 23 (UPI) -- Al-Qaida reportedly warned the Lebanese and Syrian authorities against harassing Muslim extremists captured in Lebanon for planning terrorist attacks.

Beirut's As-Safir reported Thursday an anonymous caller claiming to speak for the information office of al-Qaida network contacted its offices Wednesday night and made threats against Syrian and Lebanese intelligence agencies cautioning them against "harassing Muslim believers and mujahedeen (Muslim strugglers) in Lebanon."

The telephone call could not be authenticated, but the caller was alluding to al-Qaida-linked terror suspects arrested a few days ago for planning to bomb foreign embassies and government buildings in Lebanon.

Lebanese Interior Minister Elias Murr described the terrorist cell leader as the "most dangerous wanted person in Lebanon."
