Most Brits favor wind farms

LONDON, Sept. 20 (UPI) -- About 75 percent of British citizens favor building windmills as a renewable source of energy, BBC News Online reported Monday.

A survey by the British Wind Energy Association found about 70 percent of those polled would favor the creation of a wind farm in their area.

"Time is running out on climate change and wind power is essential to averting its potential impacts," said Marcus Rand, the BWEA's chief executive. "Britain has the best wind resource in Europe. It's everlasting, on our doorstep and ready to use now."

Opponents of the technology claim wind is an unpredictable and unreliable source of power, and turbines can be damaged or even downed by storms.

British TV botanist David Bellamy recently led a march in southern Wales to oppose plans to build wind turbines on a mountain.

The protest was led by the group Save Our Common Mountain Environment, which said wind farms ruin landscapes and kill birds and bats.

(Editor's note: This article replaces one published Monday by UPI, which incorrectly mentioned the environmental group Greenpeace as opposing wind farms. A Greenpeace spokeswoman said the group supports wind energy generation.)
