Blair calls for unity to fight terrorism

LONDON, Sept. 19 (UPI) -- British Prime Minister Tony Blair said Sunday the international community should join to together to fight terrorism in Iraq.

"Now is not the time for the international community to divide or disagree, but to come together," he said after talks with Iyad Allawi, Iraq's interim prime minister, at Downing Street.

"Whatever the disagreements about the first conflict in Iraq to remove Saddam, in this conflict now taking place in Iraq, this is the crucible in which the future of this global terrorism will be determined."

Blair said the Iraqi people's struggle is everyone's struggle, the BBC reported.

"And either it will succeed and this terrorism will grow, or we will succeed, the Iraqi people will succeed, and this global terrorism will be delivered a huge defeat," Blair added.

Allawi called on the United Nations to provide assistance to make next January's scheduled elections a success.
