Ivan was the third major storm to strike Florida this year, slamming into the Panhandle and the Gulf Coast of Alabama late Wednesday. With Charles sweeping northwest across the state from the Gulf to the Atlantic and Frances following a northeast path from Atlantic to Gulf, most of the state is now a diaster area.

Florida officials asked Panhandle residents who left the area to remain away until some of the debris has been cleared and local services restored.

Local officials said that Ivan destroyed all buildings on most barrier islands. Most of islands were totally evacuated, with even police officer snd firefighters ordered to leave.
