UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 16 (UPI) -- The new president of the U.N. General Assembly, Jean Ping, is asking the media for support in restoring the world body to its leadership role.

Ping, the Foreign Minister Jean Ping of Gabon, told a reporters at U.N. World Headquarters in New York media displayed higher interest in the work of the 15-member Security Council, whose resolutions are binding, than deliberations of the 191-member assembly, whose recommendations lack the force of law.

"We are facing many complex international challenges, and no organization is better equipped than the United Nations to address and resolve them," Ping said, adding that the assembly's role had to be recognized and strengthened.

He said for current challenges requiring collective solutions include not only wars and international terrorism, but also disease, poverty, environmental problems and development.

Ping, who succeeded Julian Hunte of Saint Lucia, said numerous problems of the changing world could only be addressed if the major organs of the United Nations -- the General Assembly, the Security Council and the Economic and Social Council -- worked in harmony.
