Manitoba judge backs gay marriage

WINNIPEG, Manitoba, Sept. 16 (UPI) -- Manitoba Thursday became the fourth Canadian province to legalize same-sex marriage, the CBC reported.

Justice Douglas Yard ruled that the current definition of marriage is unconstitutional. Three couples filed a lawsuit in Manitoba last month challenging the definition of marriage as a union between a man and a woman.

Yard said rulings in British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec influenced his decision. Ottawa will have the ultimate decision on the legal definition of marriage.

"The traditional definition of marriage is no longer constitutionally

valid in view of the provisions of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms,"

Yard said.

Canada's Supreme Court is reviewing draft legislation that would change federal law's definition of marriage.
