KABUL, Afghanistan, Sept. 15 (UPI) -- An Afghani court has sentenced three U.S. citizens to as much as 10 years each in jail for torturing Afghans and running a private jail in Kabul.
Jonathan "Jack" Idema, a known bounty hunter, and Brent Bennett were sentenced to 10 years in jail. The third man, Edward Caraballo, was given an eight-year sentence, the BBC reported Wednesday.
Before his conviction, Idema said U.S. and Afghani officials approved of his work, but no officials ever corroborated that claim.
Idema told the court: "I apologize that we tried to save these people. We should have let the Taliban murder every one of them."
A lawyer for the former Green Beret said an appeal would be filed.
Idema and his colleagues were charged with holding and torturing people in a private jail.
