Prescription drugs seized at Miami port

MIAMI, Sept. 15 (UPI) -- Federal agents at the Port of Miami have seized a shipment of prescription drugs ordered from a Canadian pharmacy, The Miami Herald reported Wednesday.

Most of the drugs were ordered by seniors in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Vermont from a Canadian website, the Food and Drug Administration said.

They were apparently bought in Europe and shipped through Freeport, Grand Bahama, to Miami.

The seizures of 450 packages were made in July, but were not made public until Tuesday. The FDA invited the drug firm to file a complaint in an attempt to get the drugs back.

"This is the first large seizure I've heard of," said David MacKay of the Canadian International Pharmacy Association.

"Rather than scaring Minnesota seniors and taking their affordable prescription drugs, FDA should focus its resources on working with Congress to create legislation that would facilitate safe and legal drug importation," said Sen. Mark Dayton, D-Minn., in a statement.
