DALLAS, Sept. 15 (UPI) -- A former Texas Air National Guard clerk has raised new questions about the authenticity of memos critical of President George Bush's service.
Marian Carr Knox, who typed memos for Lt. Col. Jerry Killian, said the documents obtained by CBS News are fake but they do reflect documents that once existed, The Dallas Morning News reported Wednesday.
Knox, who worked from 1957 to 1979 at Ellington Air Force Base in Houston, said she remembered Bush as a young officer but has not supported him as president.
Knox said the typeface did not match either of the typewriters she used and the military language was not that of the air guard. Still, she said, the content reflected Killian's thinking about the lieutenant under his command.
The memos aired on CBS's "60 Minutes" said Bush had defied a direct order to get a flight physical, benefited from the help of higher officials to "sugar coat" his record, and was grounded for failing to meet training standards.
CBS has defended the report. A network spokesman questioned Knox's qualifications as a document expert, but noted she confirmed the contents of the memos, the News said.
