Barry appears headed back to D.C. council

WASHINGTON, Sept. 14 (UPI) -- Former Washington Mayor Marion Barry had a political comeback Tuesday, winning a Democratic primary for a seat on the city council.

With much of the vote counted, Barry, who served four non-consecutive terms as mayor of the nation's capitol, ousted incumbent Councilwomen Sandy Allen, his former campaign manager, in the city's Ward 8.

A 1990 drug arrest that ended in a misdemeanor conviction near the end of his third term forced Barry to step down. After serving a six-month federal prison term, Barry was again elected mayor in 1994 but chose not to run for re-election four years later.
