LAPORTE, Ind., Sept. 15 (UPI) -- An 8-year-old LaPorte, Ind., girl reported to police a man abducted her from her bedroom, taped her mouth shut and stole her underwear before escaping.
The child told police the unidentified man used a stepladder Sunday to reach through the window of the bedroom she shares with her 10-year-old sister. He then duct-taped her mouth shut, dragged her behind a shed in the back yard, removed her pajamas and stole her underwear before escaping over a fence with the stepladder, the LaPorte Herald-Argus reported.
Police do not believe the girl was sexually assaulted, but remain concerned the alleged attacker remains at large.
"Something may have scared him off. We just aren't sure right now," said LaPorte City Police Chief of Detectives Lynn Cains.
The girl said the man told her he would return for her, according to police.
"We're definitely looking at a man who may have the beginnings of a (serial sexual offender). Since he did not do the things he could have, we feel this is someone who is immature and may be just getting started," said Cains.
