Poll: Okla. Senate race inside margin

OKLAHOMA CITY, Sept. 14 (UPI) -- Democrat U.S. Rep. Brad Carson has a narrow lead, within the margin of error, over ex-Rep. Tom Coburn, a poll for Oklahoma City's KWTV News9 said Tuesday.

The poll for the CBS affiliate marks the first time that Carson has led Coburn, a Muskogee Republican, in the race for the seat of retiring Republican U.S. Sen. Don Nickles.

The telephone poll of 500 likely Oklahoma voters conducted Sept. 10-12 showed Carson at 39 percent and Coburn with 37 percent, inside the survey's 4.4 percent margin of error.

The new numbers show recent TV ads by Carson targeting older voters are proving successful, GOP pollster Chris Wilson told the Daily Oklahoman newspaper.

Among voters older than 63, Coburn dropped 6 percent, while Carson gained 4 percent, Wilson said. Carson now has an 11 percent lead among that age group.
