France seeking compromise over Iran nuke

PARIS, Sept. 13 (UPI) -- France is seeking a compromise under which Iran would continue cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency over its nuclear activities.

"Our aim is to reach a consensus in Vienna to continue dialogue and cooperation with Tehran for confidence building," French Foreign Ministry spokesman Herve Ladsus said Monday.

He said consultations were ongoing inside and outside the European Union on how to deal with Iran's nuclear activities.

"Our aim right from the beginning is to reach an agreement indicating that we want to continue dialogue with Iran over its nuclear program," he said.

France, Britain and Germany had drafted a proposal to the IAEA under calling for a two-month deadline for Iran to provide evidence it has no intention to produce weapons of mass destruction.

The IAEA's Governors' Council is to meet later this week to discuss a U.S. proposal to refer Iran's nuclear issue to the U.N. Security Council.
