Beijing plans advertising ban

BEIJING, Sept. 13 (UPI) -- Authorities in Beijing will ban outdoor ads in selected areas of the city starting Oct. 1, China's national day, local media reports indicate.

Advertisments visible from Tiananmen Square as well as official and cultural areas along Changan Boulevard, the capital's main thoroughfare, will no longer be allowed according to a story in the Beijing Times. It includes moving ads, such as those on buses.

The order forbids advertising near Zhongnanhai, the headquarters for the Chinese Communist Party and national government State Council, the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse, foreign embassies, plus scenic and cultural spots.

The rule also applies to transportation hubs such as highway overpasses and intersections.

The state-run China Daily said Monday the number of signs involved has not yet been made public.

Beijing first removed billboards from the square and surrounding streets in 1999 for the 50th anniversary of the People's Republic of China.
