WASHINGTON, Sept. 10 (UPI) -- The Navy said it was naming ships to commemorate the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.
Two new San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock ships will be named the USS Arlington and the USS Somerset. The Navy already has a ship called the USS New York.
"USS Arlington and USS Somerset will help America project power to the far reaches of the Earth and will support the cause of freedom as we engage in the current war on terrorism," Secretary of the Navy Gordon England said in a release.
The ships are named for locations where Sept. 11 victims died. The Pentagon, which was hit by a hijacked aircraft, is in Arlington Court, Va. Passengers tried to retake control of another hijacker jetliner, leading to the plane's crashing in Somerset County in southwestern Pennsylvania.
Amphibious transport dock ships are 684-feet long and carry a 363 Navy personnel and 699 Marines. The ships are used to transport Marines and equipment. They will be built by Northrop Grumman Ship Systems in New Orleans.
