NEW YORK, Sept. 7 (UPI) -- New York authorities are searching for whoever viciously killed nearly 40 friendly ducks on Long Island, the New York Post said Tuesday.
Suffolk County police are investigating the slaughter at Pine Lake in Middle Island where 38 white ducks all had their legs broken. Some appeared to have been thrown out of cars and run over; others possibly poisoned.
Roy Gross of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said the ducks -- which were likely dumped about a week ago -- were comfortable around people.
"They were so domesticated that they would walk right up to you," he said. "I'm afraid that they were easy prey for whoever did this."
