NEW DELHI, Sept. 4 (UPI) -- Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh is due to address a national news conference Saturday, the first by an Indian Prime Minister in more than 12 years.
The venue, Vigyan Bhavan's plenary hall, was chosen to hold the large media contingent expected to attend. The last conference held for the capital's press corps was held by Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao in 1992.
The conference is designed to allow Singh to comment on a wide range of issues, including problems with Parliament in the just concluded Budget session, the Statesman reported.
In a statement, government officials said: Given his extremely busy schedule, and the fact that during the budget session of Parliament he could not grant media interviews, the Prime Minister was unable to meet all those media persons who had sought individual interviews. Hence, he has decided to address a press conference."
