Rabin's killer claims marriage by phone

TEL AVIV, Israel, Sept. 3 (UPI) -- The family of the Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin's assassin claims he has been secretly married.

The newspaper Haaretz reports that Yigal Amir apparently said his vows by telephone after his family obtained a ruling from two rabbis approving the procedure.

Amir's mother, Geula, said she was happy about the wedding.

"When you are not allowed to marry and when they try to choke you, it is not right and there is no choice," she told reporters.

Prison officials told Haaretz that all Amir's telephone calls are monitored and that he has not been overheard getting married.

Amir is serving a life sentence for shooting Rabin at a rally in 1995 in an effort to thwart Rabin's efforts to make peace with the Palestinians.

Larissa Trimbobler, the woman the Amir family claims has married him, is an immigrant from the Soviet Union and divorced mother of four. She began writing him in prison and then visiting him.
